The first
thing on my agenda this morning was to get in contact with our
good friend, WBC President Jose Sulaiman and the question I had
for him was simple. In my letter to Mr. Sulaiman I ask:
In my opinion it is very unfortunate that Gary Shaw
informed the media last night that on behalf of Marquez he is
filing a formal protest with the WBC and is asking for the
Vazquez victory to be erased, citing the point taken away for
the low blow in round ten and even questioning the called
knockdown in round ten.
Do you feel these
objections are merited and will you act on his protest, or
is this nothing more than poor sportsmanship?
In my opinion it is
truly a shame that this fight will end this way and take
away from the warrior like performances put on by both
fighters in all three fights.
Please let me know
what the WBC plans on doing, and can you give me your
thoughts on the fight itself?
Mr. Sulaiman responded as
follows:
My Dear Mr.
Trillo ,,,
I saw the
fight on television and believe that this was better than the
prior 2 fights , as it went the distance and every round was a
war, the decision was a split decision and the winning card was
only by one point.

Its a real
shame that Gary Shaw did what he did, as it is wrong, the people
of boxing are the ones that are damaging the image of boxing and
hurting our heroes, the boxers. Gary just
showed a poor sportsmanship as the point deduction was in
accordance with the boxing rules
as Marquez had been warned already 2 times on the same low blow
punching , before the point deduction , and the knock down of
the last round was effective as the rules state that when the
ring ropes impede a boxer falling to the canvas, it should be
called a knock down , and in addition, it could have been, I did
not see well, that his left glove also touched the canvas ,
which is also a knock down, according to the rules that state
that a knock down is when 3 parts of the body touch the canvas.
I praise and
applaud the referee, because if he had not counted him down,
VÄZQUEZ might have connected a dangerous punch when Marquez was
practically defenseless, and saved him from a serious physical
problem. Safety is over any other matter in boxing.
Best regards.
WBC
José Sulaimán
