The plans you ask? Well a very reliable source informed Pound4Pound.com it's drawn up like this:
Miguel Cotto will battle Oktay Urkal, probably in Connecticut early in 2007 to get his mandatory out of the way.
In the meantime, Top Rank has plans for WBO champ Antonio Margarito's mandatory too. The plans are for him to throw his belt in the dumpster and not risk losing to # 1 Paul Williams.
Next up will be a June Puerto Rican day battle in New York's "Garden" featuring WBA Champ Cotto up against Margarito in another Puerto Rico vs Mexico dream match. The undercard of that bout will feature IBF 147 pound champ Kermit Cintron vs. Joshua Clottey.
So who cares about the undercard you ask? Bob Arum, that's who!

Now the stars really have to align right for all that to take place, and apparently the wheels are already in motion.
By the way, if it all comes to pass and the October unifier takes place, don't count Cintron out. It was Kermit's trainer Manny Steward who told us exclusively this year that Cintron could handily defeat Floyd Mayweather if given the chance. One has to guess this would be seen as Cintron's chance to shine and get to that Mayweather bout. At the same time, let's not forget how good Cotto looked in his 147 pound debut recently.
2007 just may turn out to be a good year for the Welterweights, a great year for Puerto Rico and a gigantic year for Bob Arum & Top Rank. Stay tuned to Boxing2006.com & Pound4Pound.com as we will bring you any updates on these comments as we get them. |
