Boxing2006/Pound4Pound.com is hearing you may
see the words "Roy Jones Jr." and "HBO" in the
same sentence again, as in Jones will once again
fight on HBO.
Word from both the
Joe Calzaghe camp and Jones' is that both are
willing to sign a deal if Jones wins his next
non-televised bout with Prince Badi Ajamu on
July 29th.
Calzaghe had tried
for many years to make a fight with Jones in the
past, but talks always fell through.
HBO has a fight
deal in place with Calzaghe, and had set a date
aside, July 8, for the super middleweight
champ's American debut against Glen Johnson.
Calzaghe pulled out
of the date because of yet another (yeah right)
training camp injury, but apparently was never
keen on fighting Johnson, who neither holds a
title or has anywhere near the name recognition
and money/gate potential as Jones.
While everyone
thinks Jones is shot, try this on for a theory.
Mackie Shilstone the fitness guru put 18 pounds
of muscle on Jones to help him beat John Ruiz
for a heavyweight title. Jones has said the
weight loss to make 175 caused him to be at less
than his best for Tarver and Johnson.
|
Last Saturday night, Tarver,
who has mocked Jones' excuse, had to lose weight to face
Hopkins and looked like a shadow of himself, very lethargic
and slow to the punch.
Now consider this. Tarver only
had to lose weight he put on partying in Hollywood while
film the new Rocky film. Jones had to take off 18 pounds of
muscle. Who has ever had to take off MUSCLE??? Who knows
what effect that could have on your system, or how long you
need to recover from losing muscle mass.
Jones reaches the top of the
mountain for his career in winning the heavyweight title.
Suddenly he gets old in the ring and is shot? That's a
stretch in logic to some people. If it was the muscle
problem, Jones may yet have more to give. He might even beat
Calzaghe. HBO, which booted him out of it's announcer's
booth, would love to put on a Jones-Calzaghe II, don't you
think? First edition is for subscribers, second is a fat PPV
day. Only in America
