In an exclusive to Boxing2006 & Pound4Pound.com, WBC president Jose Sulaiman accused the top two boxing TV networks of undermining his sanctioning body. During a recent conversation with Jose Sulaiman, I asked him his views on why fighters care less and less about Sanctioning Bodies Championship Belts today, and did he think fighters were taking more control of their careers and disregarding those belts in the quest of big money. Mr. Sulaiman's reply was candid and he did not pull any punches, "Fighters start boxing with a dream of gaining an Olympic Gold medal and a Professional World Championship and there are many that have wrote, spoken and announced that their dream is to win the WBC green belt. It is not true that they don’t care for the title! I know that they wouldn’t put aside the WBC’s Belt! HBO and SHOWTIME are trying to get rid of the sanctioning bodies, but then who will plant the seed of the career of a boxer? They (HBO/Showtime) will not! They only want the top of the cream, but who will cook the cream to have a top? For sure the WBC will !" When I pressed the WBC President to elaborate, Mr. Sulaiman declined. |
